Cordass Pell has a problem. When the 21 year old regains consciousness on a strange ship, he finds that he is on his way to serve a life sentence on the frozen penal planet of Demerl. But before the transport arrives, the ship is hijacked by pirates and Pell and the other prisoners are sold as slaves to a sadistic owner in a distant star system. The trouble is that he can't remember anything about his life before waking up on that prison transport. And someone keeps trying to kill him.
As he tries to learn about his mysterious past he realizes that the secret of his identity may hold the key to stabilizing the turbulent political situation in his home nation and perhaps all of human occupied space.
Shadowplay Book One of the Starcrown Chronicles eBook Jon Gerrard
I enjoyed the plot and the main character grows on you as the author develops Pell. In short, you have a story line of Cordass Pell a 21 year old that regains consciousness on a prison ship, in route to the penal planet of Demerl. This is particularly disturbing because he does not remember anything of his life let alone yesterday. The ship is hijacked by pirates and all the prisoners are going to be sold as slaves. We have to stop there to avoid spoilers.Personally I prefer space operas with swift plot action and strong character development. If you are the same then I would suggest you read this one too. It is a complete story built for a follow on book.

Shadowplay Book One of the Starcrown Chronicles eBook Jon Gerrard Reviews
It has been a couple of months since I read this. I can't say anything bad about it but neither did it stand out and make me want more.
Fast paced and a pretty good read. Good characters and a decent plot make it enjoyable. Hard to fiind a free book this well done.
I've been reading SciFi and Fantasy for over 50 years. A number of books self published on are every bit as good as those distributed by major houses. This one is not.
The style comes across as very amateur and not polished. My gut tells me this is the authors first book. The wording and phrasing are not smooth. It's clear that the author is using today's (2013 Obama presidency) as a commentary on loss of rights, censorship, etc. I have no issue with that and actually agree with most of the "positions" taken.
The characters are not well developed so I never got in touch or invested with them. It was mostly predictable, stumbled along and would most likely be something someone in their early teens might read.
Getting it for free is fine. Paying for a sequel just isn't in the cards given the state of Book #1.
Impressive first science fiction novel This book has several new twists on the "missing royal" type of plot and was a page turner to the end. The editing was well done, which is not always thus case with a New author, and the science is very readable. I hope his next novel in the defied is out soon!
Too many people worry about "character development". I didn't, I just enjoyed the story. It is the first book, after all. Perhaps the second installment will do so. All I know is that I flew through it. Fun story, although the protagonist does get a bit long-winded at times.
Is the sequel, Scourge, out already?
It's a good book to read. I like sci-fi, especially military science-fi. It's worth the money in my opinion.

Good story. Good story-telling. Good character development. Lots of action and intrigue.
